Mophead Hydrangea Hydrangea macrophylla

The most popular kind of Hydrangeas grown in home gardens. Most mopheads are pink or blue in color with just a few available in white. Alter bloom color by changing the soil’s pH with the use of aluminum sulfate or lime. Be sure to grow in an area with protection from hot afternoon sun and keep the soil moist and water in dry weather. Mopheads do not need to be trimmed back but if you do need or want to trim them to shape, do this before any new buds set (by July). For any of the Hydrangeas in the Endless Summer family, trimming can be done at any time as they set buds on both new and old wood. The recommended way to trim a Hydrangea is to cut (or even pull) out any dead stems in early spring before leaves sprout. Dead stems will contain no flower or leaf buds.
